It is said that the seed is the origin of life, and the worldview of different civilizations throughout the history of humanity reveals a recurring correlation between the conception they had of the world and the germination process of said particle. From pre-Columbian art we know the Mayan records of Yaaxché, the tree commonly known as ceiba, whose roots emanate from the jaws of Xibalbá, connecting the underworld – the world of the dead – with the Earth and the sky, which represented the spiritual world for them. . Here is the genesis of this exhibition.
For Alejandro Osorio, the seed and its life-generating quality are not only a subject of scientific but also metaphysical study. Investigating the biological process of germination, at the same time as reflecting on the mythological fiction around this microcosmic fraction, has triggered an artistic exercise that replicates the action of thinking about the subject in 4 moments: the first, through an experience augmented reality; the second, exploring a wood and cardboard installation; the third, the appreciation of the two-dimensional practice of drawing; and the fourth through the visitor’s own reflection on the reason for this exhibition at La Colecturía.
Another recurring investigation of the artist is the landscape. Osorio is interested in the monumentality of the artistic piece and the viewer’s position in relation to it. In this exhibition, the space that contains the two three-dimensional exercises is not only a physical container but also a conceptual one, since both representations dialogue about nature and technology in the Western world in two iconic locations of La Colecturía: the water mirror, heart of the enclosure, and the fruit forest, which houses the piece Universo Expandido IV, by the visual artist Raymundo Sesma.
Finally, at La Colecturía, Knowledge Interaction Center, we promote Buen Vivir, a concept that is growing in popularity in Latin America that refers to the relationship between human beings and their natural environment and that also questions the adoption in said territory of term “progress”, as a collective aspiration of modern Europe. Therefore, the exhibition, A small altar of promises under the horizon, represents the materialization of our reason for being. Welcome and welcome.
